Abstract

Large volume, hollow-core coaxial, germanium lithium-drift, gamma-ray detectors have been fabricated from Czochralski type crystals 55 to 70 mm dia. Crystal machining was carried out prior to drifting and both conventional and “inside-out” drifts have been made. Central holes 16 to 31 mm dia. have been used and, in this report, two typical detectors and cryostats are described: (1) a 75 cm 3 detector mounted in a vertical “dipstick” type cryostat with a “well” 19 mm dia. × 100 mm long in the cap, (2) a 44 cm 3 detector mounted horizontally in a gravity-feed cryostat having a horizontal tube passing right through the core of the detector. The latter has an absolute full-energy peak efficiency for 137Cs (662 keV) γ-rays of 4.5%, and for 60Co (1333 keV) γ-rays of 1.3%.
