Abstract

(Abstracted from Am J Obstet Gynecol 2017;216:259.e1–259.e6) Increasing concern that use of electric power morcellation during hysterectomy for benign conditions may result in the spread of an occult leiomyosarcoma (LMS) led the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue safety communications in April 2014 and November 2014, recommending that this procedure should not be used in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. These communications significantly changed practice patterns of many gynecologic surgeons, increasing rates of abdominal hysterectomy (AH), and possibly resulting in more complications for patients.
