Abstract

This paper outlines a general research and conceptual framework for studying perceptions of and reactions to ethno-linguistic diversity. In particular, a psychologically based model of social norms is presented, and discussed vis-à-vis its heuristic value for the study of speech norms and inter-group perceptions. This model, which attempts to integrate both social psychological and larger group processes, views norms as consisting of an overall cognitive structure, and a socially situated “focus”. The specific components of this model are discussed in light of existing data on normatively regulated language behaviour.
