Abstract

The Justice of the Bishops of Maguelone (1364-1369). Accounts kept in the archives of the Vatican are a source of information as to the way the bishops of Maguelone practiced justice under Urban V. Important or appeal cases were tried in the Salle-l’Évêque in Montpellier by the official, who was assisted by provosts (viguiers), judges, clerks (sergents ) and prosecutors. Minor misdemeanours were tried by local provosts. Prison terms were served in the dungeons of episcopal castles, especially the one in Montferrand. The episcopal court also held assizes outside of the bishop’s palace in order to try appeal cases against the sentences of the local provosts. The accounts also show the cost of justice : wages and travel expenses of the judges and clerks, maintenance of the convicts, repairs.
