Abstract
Internationalization is nowadays one of the main challenges for family firms worldwide, as a consequence of the globalization of the competitive environment. This challenge is particularly important for this kind of firm owing to the fact that these firms tend to be adverse to any change in their strategy that may lead to a possible loss of ownership. This paper proposes a general model oriented towards understanding the selection of the internationalization strategy in family firms. We also deepen the understanding of the nature of the international behavior of SMEs by using a sample of 435 firms from Andalusia. Results point to a lesser international activity in the analyzed family firms when compared to non-family firms, as well as to differences in the professional qualification of their managers.
