Abstract
The identification of the great altar in the Theatre square on Delos with the altar of Dionysos mentioned in the accounts of the hieropoioi is not acceptable. Everything points to the conclusion that there was only one altar of Dionysos on Delos in the period of independence, which was located to the northeast ofthe Sanctuary of Apollo.
