Abstract

Since its January 2023 accession to the Schengen area, Croatia’s role as the European Union’s foremost external border facing the Balkan Route has become more pronounced. Despite a reported increase in asylum requests, Croatia remains a place of transit for migrants, though one posing a hard challenge to those bent on reaching their destinations further inside the EU. Their experience when crossing this first EU country sheds light on a number of policies, often controversial or ineffective, put in place by Europe as deterrent against migrants.
