Abstract
The basin of the Upper Ubaye (situated to the northeast of Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence) is well known for its erosional phenomena and for network of rushing streams which has shaped its relief and the profiles of lateral valleys since the last glaciation. Relief is marked by the legacy of natural phenomena and humanization of the environment. The authors present the state of knowledge in geomorphology and archaeology of these mountain environments. Prospecting results on the part of geomorphologists and archeologists are compared point by point in order to try to understand the different phases of prehistory, history, medieval and modern settlement and their interactions with the mountain environment. They demonstrate the impact of human activities with the appearance of man in this unstable and mishandled landscape by the vagaries of climate.
