Abstract

The following study explores the means of expression adopted by Greek mathematicians and more specifically the use they made of the category of person. The choice of this point of view leads to an analysis of the mathematical text not only for its conceptual content but as a speech act involving, to a greater or lesser extent, the mathematician and the reader. The identification of phenomena linked with utterance markers of person reveals that a variety of relationships structure mathematical discourse according to the nature of the text and the status the writer attributes to the reader.
