Abstract

Regional planning in France. — British geographers have learned to be sceptical of spatial scenarios, offered under the banner of aménagement du territoire, which display little concern for the harsh realities of social, economic, cultural and political life. The report seems to pay little attention to human problems in France, and to the fact that France is part of the European Union. The risk that decentralization of activities from Paris might weaken the international status not only of the capital but also of France is not addressed sufficiently. Creation of new universities does not automatically guarantee local economic revival. Hard thought needs to be given to the future of French countryside in the challenging context of the revisited CAP. The report prompts the observation that aménagement du territoire is not about the future well being of space, but rather about the well being of (some) people living in particular space ?
