Abstract

Computer-based tools are indispensable for acoustic analysis of speech signals in the time and frequency domains. One of the oldest of these tools was developed by Dennis Klatt for use at the MIT Speech Group. Other programs, both commercial and shareware, are now in popular use on Windows and Mac platforms. Although these programs provide commonly needed functions, Klatt’s program, now called XKL, has useful functions not provided by these other tools. These functions include spectra that are averaged throughout a time window, spectra that are averaged across waveforms, and smoothed spectra. In addition, his spectrogram algorithm produces particularly nice spectrograms. Therefore, it has been a goal to make XKL more easily available to the speech community. To this end, XKL has been ported to the Mac platform, and labeling and F0 contour functions have been added. Other changes will be described and information on accessing the program will be provided.
