Abstract

The kinetics of the chain propagation mechanism have been studied in the alternating copolymerization of styrene with methyl methacrylate (MMA) over the complex former diethyl aluminium chloride. A kinetic approach for the analysis of this process not requiring the independent determination of the equilibrium constant of complex formation has been developed. The spontaneous and the UV-initiated copolymerizations have differing mechanisms of initiation but a single mechanism of chain propagation. The propagation consists of a simultaneous addition of the separate monomers and the donor-acceptor complexes of the co-monomers in which the first mechanism dominates. A number of statistical and kinetic parameters of the chain propagation have been calculated for the described system.
