Abstract

This essay discusses how instructors can use popular animated films in their classrooms to exemplify progressive Marxian topics. In this particular case, A Bug's Life, which is a collaboration by the Disney Corporation and PIXAR, is analyzed. The film highlights issues of class revolution, exploitation, collective action, solidarity, and worker ingenuity. A lively and creative though relatively short film, A Bug's Life is packed with issues of economic and social justice, to which students brilliantly respond in their class discussions and papers. This is but one example of many works of popular culture that can help students connect with important progressive and/or Marxian concepts.
