Abstract
The paper reports and discusses the findings of a study on the EC Framework Programme and the technology strategies of European firms, which was part of a larger project on the impact of the Framework Programme on European industry. It discusses the influence of three sets of factors that may interfere in the exploitation of EC R&D results by individual firms: factors relating to the participating firms; factors relating to the R&D that the EC finances; and factors that differentiate EC R&D projects from those undertaken by individual firms without EC support. A qualitative enquiry covering 26 organizations gives rise to some conclusions as to the exploitability of EC R&D.
