Abstract
Variational calculations of the energies of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances are carried out using trial wave functions. The expectation values of the energies are determined by the density profile and the nucleon-nucleon pair correlation function. Thus, experimental measurements of giant resonance energies yield information about the nature of the correlations between nucleons. In particular, an A − 1 3 dependence of energy on nucleon number implies a pair correlation function that varies as r −4 at large separations. At small A, short range correlations cause a deviation from the A − 1 3 energy variation.
