Abstract
Abstract Four size/density fractions of suspended matter were isolated from coastal and freshwater samples with the use of a modified continuous‐flow centrifuge. The fractions did not differ much in organic and inorganic matter content. The fraction with the smallest size/density that may be transported over large distances before being deposited, is enriched in Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb and depleted in Ca and Hf. Contents of Al, Fe, Sc, V,. Cr, Co, La, Ce, Sm and Th were similar in all fractions. Manganese was found to be enriched in the smallest fraction in the Rhine estuary and in the near coastal area.
