Abstract

Abstract The effect of sludge recycle ratio on a biological single‐sludge, nitrification‐denitrification system, treating high ammonia (200–260 mg L−1) leachate, was investigated. Although overall ammonia removals were not affected by the increase in recycle ratios (from 4:1 to 10:1), the nitrification and denitrification performances became very unstable beyond a 6:1 ratio. The same ratio also resulted in the lowest N0x (and suspended solids) levels in the effluent of the system, by utilizing more effectively its denitrification potential.
