Abstract

A procedure is described for the isolation of nucleic acids from the colonial green alga Volvox carteri. The molecular weights and molar base ratios of the ribosomal RNA's from both the chloroplast and the cytoplasm are reported. The heavy chloroplast ribosomal RNA in this species is extremely labile. Methods for the isolation of this RNA are described and possible reasons for its lability are discussed.
