Abstract
By means of perfusion techniques sucrose, alone or in combination with ATP, ADP, and buffer solutions, was supplied exogenously to the cells surrounding the xylem in tomato internodes. ATP (pH 3.4) and citric acid-phosphate buffer (pH 3.4) enhanced the uptake of sucrose to the same extent. ADP (pH 4.8) produced 60% less effect. A citric acidphosphate phosphate buffer (pH 6.5) neutralized the promoting effect of ATP. All results point to a promoting effect of the low pH rather than of ATP on the uptake of sucrose.
