Abstract

Abstract We have investigated microstructural origins for enhanced critical current densities in YBCO and YBCO/Ag composite superconductors synthesized via the novel IGP-Bridgman hybrid technique for enhanced critical current densities. Through our investigations, we have observed that addition of Ag precipitates in YBCO/Ag bulk samples via the novel hybrid process deteriorates the sample microstructure whereas in pristine YBCO bulk samples superior current densities are observed. The microstructural origins for relative differences in critical currents have been traced. However, enhanced pinning due to paramagnetic centers lead to peculiar Jc(H) profiles for Ag added composites.
