Abstract

The title of this collection is metaphorical. Its focus is on prehistoric cultural connections across the Bering Sea, as discussed by prominent Soviet archeologists. The theme of a "bridge" is also appropriate, given increasing Soviet-American cooperation in understanding the archeology of the region. And finally, bridges are being built by the people who live today on either side of the Bering, after decades of being kept apart by a political "ice curtain." They have become increasingly fascinated by the ancient history of their northern world, and this collection is dedicated to them.
