Abstract

In some cultures, people can be arrested and even killed for writing graffiti. In others, they can be honored for leaving their marks on stone stelae. The contexts, development, and deciphering of writing systems are among the most strikingly significant and variant of all aspects of human culture. This issue explores some of the most creative and archaic sign systems that were formed on Eurasian territory, from the Don River, to the Black Sea and the Caucasus, across Central Asia to the Altai mountains. Not only are the systems themselves fascinating, but the stories behind their discoveries are dramatic indications of the lengths researchers will go to crack codes.
