Abstract
Being part of a higher-order basin system, Seversky Donets River is an important object to study nitrogen nutrient pollution in the water area of Azov and Black Sea Basins. In this work, we researched nitrate, ammonium ion and dissolved oxygen concentrations in Seversky Donets River, a tributary of Don River, in two sampling points of the upper (tailwater of Belgorod reservoir and vicinity of Novaya Tavolzhanka Village) and one sampling point of the lower (vicinity of Russian–Ukrainian border) course. The obtained analytical data show that NH4+/NO3− annual average ratio was sufficiently increased during 15-year period, whereas there were no decrease in the annual average oxygen concentrations and sufficient temperature changes in the same sampling points. The possible role of the nitrification in this trend and reliability of the applied analytical methods are discussed. In addition, we show that S. Donets River may contribute up to 70–80% of total NO3− pollution and 55–65% of total NH4+ pollution in Don River, contributing only about 30% of total Don River discharge.
