Abstract

The task of optimizing the content of general secondary education in accordance with the requirements of society ranks with—among others—such "eternal" problems of pedagogy as increasing the efficacy of the teaching process, struggle with [some] pupils, who lag behind in their studies, and the elaboration of more optimal ways, means, and organized forms of instruction. Under conditions when the education system in the USSR must respond to the demands of a society of developed socialism—a society that has been constructed on a scientific foundation—the need becomes obvious for a theoretical identification of the foundations, general orientation, and principles of improving that system. In other words, schooling must be built on a well-thought-out and theoretically validated plan. This circumstance makes the issue of elaborating on questions of the theory of general secondary education one of foremost importance.
