Abstract
As I begin my tenure as multimedia review editor at the JSAH, I am keenly aware that this is a passing of the baton more than a beginning. My two predecessors—Edward Dimendberg and Beatriz Colomina—have long since established multimedia as worthy of the JSAH readership's attention. Indeed, such attention was overdue. Media have long had a symbiotic relationship with architecture.1 After all, where would modernism be without the Gesamtkunstwerk, the term Richard Wagner coined to signal the absorption of architecture, music, and theater into a total multimedia sensory assault?2While the JSAH's recent attention to this topic must in part be prompted by the impact of the development of new media on our consumption, new media are hardly new anymore.
