Abstract

Introduction: Plantar heel pain (PHP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition and common cause of foot pain presenting to sports medicine practitioners. Previous research using magnetic resonance imaging has reported reduced rearfoot muscle volume in experienced runners with PHP symptoms greater than 2 years duration. It is unknown if these deficits exist in the general population presenting with PHP, including those with shorter duration pain, and if deficits can be detected with ultrasound imaging - a less expensive, more readily available clinical assessment of muscle morphology. An improved understanding of deficits associated with PHP is important for the development of effective long term management. The aim of this study was to evaluate intrinsic foot muscle morphology in individuals with and without PHP.
