Abstract
Introduction: Plantar heel pain (PHP) is a common chronic condition, particularly in runners. The intrinsic foot muscles are important for optimal foot function and work with the plantar fascia to support the foot's arches, particularly during activities of increasing load. Evidence from magnetic resonance imaging studies suggests that total muscle volume at the rearfoot is reduced in runners with PHP, however it's unclear how this relates to pain and function, or participant anthropometry. This study investigated the relationship between intrinsic foot muscle morphology, foot posture, pain and function in individuals with PHP.
