Abstract
Paco Bezerra’s new play Muero porque no muero. La doble vida de Teresa (I Die for I Die Not. The Double Life of Teresa) was geared to be a success. Critics certainly agreed. In 2021, Spain’s SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores – General Society of Authors and Editors) awarded Bezerra’s play as Best of the Year. And it had also been chosen as one of five plays to be performed by the European Theatre Project’s Prospero-Extended Theatre for their 2022–23 season. The play was to receive its premiere at Teatros del Canal in January 2023 and then travel throughout Europe. But in the summer of 2022, Bezerra received a call from Blanca Li, the director of Teatros del Canal, informing him that Muero had been cancelled due to budgetary constraints, an excuse that would soon be rebutted. It would soon be clear that the cancellation of the production of Bezerra’s play was an act of censorship instigated by the extreme-right party Vox (with the help of the Popular Party, or PP, who governed the Madrid region). In my interview with Bezerra, we discuss what happened and the impact that it has had not only on his career but also on the Spanish theatre landscape.
