Abstract

Nurse practitioners encounter many patients who are seeking to modify their lifestyle by engaging in various types of diets. Intermittent fasting (IF) is one form of dieting that is currently popular; however, there is limited evidence on the potential benefits and risks of IF. IF also poses unique mental health considerations. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding IF and discusses clinical implications for the nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners can provide proactive and evidence-based counsel regarding popular diets such as IF to ensure dietary guidance includes physical and mental health.
