Three example units are presented, with a description of the male and female heroes in each of the central novels for whole-class reading and a description of other posi tive characters in related novels for independent reading. Mystery or problem-solving units A popular unit in middle schools is based on a mys tery or problem-solving theme. Mystery stories and nov els appeal to young adolescents because the female and male detectives use courage, intelligence, and creativity to solve suspenseful and often dangerous mysteries.
