Abstract

This article contains a review of the purpose, design, and future of in-service education for STEM teachers. The first part of the article is a review of the goals and aims of in-service teacher education programs. Embedding STEM within an in-service teacher education program is contemplated through a subject matter knowledge orientation. A review of research pertaining to high quality in-service education programs suggests how to design STEM in-service teacher education programs. The article concludes with suggestions about emerging considerations in STEM in-service education and pressing research questions.
