Abstract
Schemes for the dynamic stabilization of pinches which rely on oscillating magnetic fields transverse to the main static field encounter severe difficulties caused by the screening of the field by residual plasma. It is shown that insulating limiters, regularly spaced along a discharge tube, suppress this screening effect by exciting stationary torsional hydromagnetic waves in the space between adjacent limiters, thus enabling the axial oscillating current to flow on the central plasma core.
