Abstract
Abstract Shallots are an important ingredient in many dishes around the world, but their production can be challenging, especially in dry climates. Efforts to increase shallot production are carried out by applying chitosan which can increase plant resistance in drought conditions. This research aims to analysed the effect of concentration and time interval of chitosan administration on the growth and production of shallots in dry climate areas. The research design used was a randomized block design with two factors, namely chitosan concentration (0; 1; 2 and 3 g/L) and application time interval (10; 15 and 20 days). The study was conducted in 2023 between April and August at the research area of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency in Sampali Village, Deli Serdang Regency. The research results showed that the chitosan concentration had a noteworthy impact on the growth of leaves., while the interaction of concentration and application time interval significantly impacted the growth of the tuber’s diameter and dry weight. To increase shallot production in dry climates, it is recommended to use a 2 g/L concentration of chitosan an application interval of every 20 days.
