Abstract

We report age-specific incidence for all 296 newly diagnosed cases of ovarian cancer between the years 1983 to 1990 inclusive, recorded by the Southern Tumour Registry covering the counties of Cork and Kerry (1991 population 531533) in SW Ireland. This is the first population based study of ovarian malignancy in any part of Ireland. The median age at diagnosis is 62.2 years while cumulative risk to 75 years is 1.3%. The overall l-, 2and 5-year survival rates are 55.6%, 36.5% and 23.7%, respectively. Ovarian cancer accounted for 5.1% of all female malignancies and both age at diagnosis and metastatic status significantly influence prognosis.
