Abstract

Alangium salvifolium (L. f.) Wang. (AS) is a medium sized tree of dry deciduous forest. The leaves has been used for bone fracture and seeds for rheumatism. A. salvifolium seeds were successfully extracted with ethanol and water separately. The extracts were subjected to evaluate free radical scavenging activity (DPPH and OH) and antioxidant activity (ammonium molybdate dependent) and ferric chloride induced lipid peroxidation in goat liver tissue homogenate. The total phenolic and flavonoid content was quantified by using spectrophotometric methods. The phytochemical results indicate that water extract extracted more amount of phenolic content, while alcoholic extract contain more amount flavonoid content. Alcoholic (AE) and water (WE) extracts of AS seeds exhibited concentration dependant activity to free radicals (DPPH & OH) and lipid peroxidation in Goat liver tissue homogenate. Of the tested extracts AE showed strong free radical and antioxidant activity. The present study results indicate that, AS seed extracts are good source of bioactive compounds.
