Abstract

Even at this time of increased attention to mental health issues nationally, the effort to raise public awareness is no walk in the park. But in Morris County, New Jersey, a walk in the park might cause a visitor to spot a brightly colored picnic table designed as a marker for the need to eliminate stigma around mental illness. Eighteen tables in what Morris County government officials call “optimistic yellow” have been installed throughout the county, as part of the Morris County Stigma‐Free Communities Initiative. The tables are adorned with plaques explaining the initiative's intent, as well as QR codes that link visitors to mental health resources in the community. Sponsors of the effort, which include the local mental health association and the county chamber of commerce, commented, “We are donating these tables to raise awareness about mental health and offer a space for conversation and connection.”
