Abstract

This final article in the series on sensory loss concentrates on helping deafblind patients to communicate more easily, improve their mobility and manage the practical activities of daily living. Healthcare staff have an important role to play in helping deafblind people access local services and in providing support. They can help to maximize a deafblind person's residual vision and hearing by checking that low-vision aids and hearing aids are provided. Profound loss of sight and hearing also affects a person's mobility. By ensuring that appropriate equipment is provided, healthcare staff can enhance patients' lives by helping them to manage their mobility and activities of daily living more easily. There are a number of charities that provide information to help healthcare staff to support their patients; details of some organizations are given at the end of the article.
