Abstract

This article explores the legal and ethical issues that impact the safe administration of medicines. A discussion is provided on understanding the role of the healthcare assistant (HCA), assistant practitioner (AP) and informed consent, which is key to ethical and legal care provision. Mental capacity and the practice of covert medication administration is also outlined. By upholding ethical and legal principles, the HCA and AP can ensure that patient-centred care, which respects individuals' rights and promotes their wellbeing, is consistently practiced.
