Abstract

A new technique for enhancing the bandwidth of annular wire or slot antennas is proposed. Using this technique, the geometry of a simple wire or slot ring antenna is modified to obtain a new type of ring antenna, henceforth referred to as the bi-semicircular ring antenna. Although they occupy the same area, the modified antennas have much wider bandwidth than the ordinary printed annular slot or strip antennas. The bandwidth enhancement factor for such antennas is maximised by optimising their geometrical parameters. Prototypes of the wideband bi-semicircular strip and slot antennas are designed, fabricated and tested, and measurement results confirm that the modified antennas provide bandwidth values much larger than the original annular slot and strip antennas. Furthermore, the antennas demonstrate consistent radiation patterns, low cross-polarised radiation levels and high efficiency values across their entire bands of operation.
