Abstract

External beam radiation therapy is one of popular modalities for cancer treatment. The advancement in treatment technologies and computerized treatment planning systems have made it possible to deliver high dose to the tumor. Dose calculations implemented in treatment planning systems, however, can be inaccurate when radiation beam travels through heterogeneities before reaching the target. The purpose of this article is to summarize the latest findings on the accuracy of most commonly used photon dose calculation algorithms in commercial treatment planning systems. PubMed and Google Scholar were used to do the literature search, and the results from the relevant articles are reviewed.Current literature suggests that Acuros XB is more accurate for dose calculations in external beam photon radiation therapy.
