Implementation of image median filters using programmable logic devices

Abstract

A two-dimensional median filter structure, oriented at implementation in programmable logic devices and ensuring ultrafast determination of a median of data in a two-dimensional window owing to the parallel execution of comparison and ordering operations is presented. This approach ensures the cost-effective implementation is suitable for filtering both stationary and movable images, and allows one to expand the application area of the median filtering.
