Abstract

Following a summary of the expected nature and societal consequences of the global climatic warming that can be anticipated to result from large-scale use of fossil fuel energy, a plea is made for intensive research devoted to determining the degree of urgency of this potential environmental threat. The research should center on means for rationally analyzing far-off events, of potentially high, but very uncertain costs, and include study of the social and economic structural elements involved for a transition of the world's primary energy resource base.
