Abstract

The article presents the results of a survey on the contribution of tourism in community development in the province of Maputo in Mozambique. The study focused on the economic evaluation of tourist projects (lodges) in Gala and Madjadjane. The direct and indirect employment and, benefit sharing were used as indicators to assess the impact of tourism in the community. To assess the sustainability of the lodges were used as criteria, the cost-benefit analysis, current net value and return rate. The results showed that the lodges have created some new direct jobs for heads of households (10% of households in Madjadjane and 17% in Gala). There was a benefit sharing in the community of Gala, because community members shared the income from tourist activity. The economic evaluation showed that the Madjadjane lodge expenses are greater than the income which puts at risk the sustainability of the project. While at the Gala lodge were registered incomes that provide a modest operation of services. Community tourism
