Abstract

Without Mental Health there can be no Physical Health. Mental and physical health is intimate linked .we can be physically strong only if we are mentally strong. Half a century letter, there is well documented data in various journals and books, which are strongly evidence of bidirectional relationship between mental illnesses specifically depression and anxiety with physical health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2011). Researches in the field of association of mental and physical illness, indicates there is strong liked between physical health and Depression (Goldberg, 2010; Moy et al., 2009; Lin et al., 2003; Trivedi, 2004; Kim et al., 2005; Williamson, & Schulz,1992; Patten et al., 2009; Coulombe, Reid, Boyle, & Racine, 2010, etc.). Mental illnesses are themselves risk factors that affect the incidence and prognosis of diseases traditionally classified as non-communicable. Patients with type II diabetes mellitus, for example, are twice as likely to experience depression as the general population and those patients with diabetes who are depressed have greater difficulty with self-care. Patients suffering from mental illness are twice as likely to smoke cigarettes as other people and in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease mental illness is linked to poorer clinical outcomes. Up to 50% of cancer patients suffer from a mental illness, especially depression and anxiety, and treating symptoms of depression in cancer patients may improve survival time. Similarly, in patients who are depressed, the risk of having a heart attack is more than twice as high as in the general population; further, depression increases the risk of death in patients with cardiac disease. Moreover, treating the symptoms of depression after a heart attack has been shown to lower both mortality and re-hospitalization rates (WHO, 2011 .b.). Burrows et al. (2001) found in their research Suicidal rates were 6th time as comparison of normal suicidal patients in depressive patients. But this is not necessary that depressed mood always consider as pathological trait in psychiatry. It may also be a normal reaction to certain life events, a symptom of some medical conditions, a nutritional deficiency or a side effect of some drugs or medical treatments. mood is also a primary or associated feature of certain psychiatric syndromes such as clinical depression. Clinically, Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being (Salmans, 1997).NIMS (2012) reported Depressed people can feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worried, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable, hurt, or restless. They may lose interest in activities that were once pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details, or making decisions, and may contemplate, attempt, or commit suicide. Insomnia, excessive sleeping, fatigue, loss of energy, or aches, pains, or digestive problems may also be present.Depression can occur due to a multitude of causes. It may be a result of a physical illness, bereavement, alcoholism, childbirth, or severe life events. It may occur as a result of problems that occurred in early childhood or as a result of present difficulties relating to home or work (Chhajer, 2005).The distinguished psychologist Martin Seligman described depression as The common cold of psychiatry. About 12 % of the population experiences a depression severe enough to require treatment at some time in their lives, although the vast majority of episodes of depression end within 3 to 6months even without treatment (Butler & Hope, 2007). According to WHO. (2011.C.). India is the most depressed country in all over the Other report of WHO (2012.a.) claimed depression as a Global Burden Disease. Depression is a significant contributor to the Global burden of disease and affects people in all communities across the world. …
