Summary

Introduction

Globalization is a comprehensive phenomenon, and has been defined in several ways. Globalization has achieved the unusual status, in a relatively short time, of becoming fashionable in academic debates in the social sciences, in the business world, and to some extent in the popular media (Walsham, 2001). It is a social process in which the constraints of geography on social and cultural arrangements recede and in which people become increasingly aware that they are receding (Malcolm, 1995). Giddens (1991) suggests that globalization can be defined as “the intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa”.
