Abstract
The immunologic processes of tolerance enable the organism to distinguish between self and non-self and are, therefore, critical for an efficient immune system. Exogenous factors as contact allergens that disturb tolerance mechanisms induce the development of allergic diseases. In contrast, oral and i.v. applications of allergens or painting of allergens onto the skin after UV-radiation induce hapten-specifc tolerance reactions. In addition, the murine model of low-zone tolerance to allergens demonstrates that the physiological uptake of very small amounts of allergenic antigens by way of the skin induce a naturally occurring tolerance to contact allergens. Nonetheless, it is assumed to occur also in humans, although it is not demonstrable unless different proofs of existence become available.
