Abstract

The incidence rate of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) coexistent with thyroid carcinoma (TC) has an upward tendency in recent years. The association of this two disorders has long been a topic of controversy. Because an clinical correlation between HT and TC exists, immunological links between these two conditions are possible and probably rather complex. Hashimoto's thyroiditis may lead to thyroid carcinoma, or appear as an antitumor immune response. In this article we review the researches describing these potential immunological mechanisms that might lead to the synchronous appearance of HT and TC.
