Abstract

This chapter discusses the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data (S-57). S-57 IHO Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data has been developed by the International Hydrographic Organization's Committee for the Exchange of Digital Data (CEDD). It describes the standard to be used for the exchange of digital hydrographic data between national hydrographic offices and for its distribution to manufacturers, mariners, and other data users—for example, for the supply of data for Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). The standard includes a model, on which it is catalogue of all object interest to hydrography, exchange format (DX-90) theoretical based, classes of and an providing mechanisms to encode the data. The encapsulation method is based on the ISO 8211 Standard.
