Abstract

Summary form only given. The IEEE Computer Society sponsors the development of software engineering standards and recommended practices for the software industry. These standards address the requirements, design, test, verification, validation, measurement, plans, and documentation aspects of software engineering projects. Knowledgeable and interested individuals from industry, government, and academia participate in various standards groups tasked with developing a particular standard. The authors describe what the IEEE Computer Society and other standards organizations are doing to promote a disciplined approach to software engineering practice and how aerospace systems engineering organizations can apply these standards to their projects. The software standardization activities of national and international standards organizations (ANSI, X3, ISO, IEC), government organizations (NBS, US DoD), professional societies (IEEE, ASQC, ACM) and trade associations (AIA, EIA, NSIA, CBEMA), are highlighted. >
