Abstract

Work leading towards standards for database languages began in the CODASYL Database Task Group (DBTG) in the 1960s and 1970s, continued in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) beginning in the late 1970s, and since the early 1980s has been focused in the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the various national standards organizations that participate in the ISO group. These efforts have produced standards for two database languages, SQL, for relational databases, and NDL, for networkstructured databases. The SQL standard has been widely implemented, and revisions that significantly extend it are in progress. The NDL standard has nut been implemented, and there are no plans for revision or extension.
